July 8, 2006

Well everyone...We're here and doing well!! The flight over was great and no problems. Two people, 4 bags, 3 carry-ons...no problem!! Yeah right!! We just can't wait to try all that with a baby!! We stayed in Almaty the first two nights and caught our flight to Koksheteau on the 7th via the "yak". Well...to start off I (Rachel) was quite nervous, then to have the flight delayed for TWO hours, didn't help much. But, we made it okay and got to see Nikita (Mason) yesterday, the 7th. He is beautiful and even though he cried (screamed) most of the visit, he is perfect. He was fine with us for a while, until he looked and realized we were strangers, then he could start crying again. Today, he was much better, I went into the room to take him, and he stared at me, as though he knew who I was, and then when his caregiver put him down to WALK, that's right, I said walk...to me, he started crying and walked straight to me. So, he was crying, but still comfortable enough to come to me. Then, Ryan and I played with him (or tried to play) and all he did was cry, then lay his head on our shoulder (loved it!!!). He would walk back and forth to each of us and then cuddle which was perfect.

Now, regarding time in Kaz...Almaty was hot as can be...at least in the 90's, but Koksheteau has been in the 70's or lower. Our apartment is very nice, but as of 1:00 this afternoon...no water. We're hoping to have water by the time we get home tonight...but, who can say.

Right now, we're at Jen and Brian Cantwell's apartment who are also here to adopt a son. They're about twelve days ahead of us, and right about now, our saving grace. They are going to help us at the store tonight and are helping us become accustomed to the culture and vodka!! =) Tomorrow our meeting with Mason will be at 2:3O, so a little vodka tonight won't hurt!! By the way...sun goes down around 10:30 pm and rises at 4:00 am. I guess we're getting a feel for what people in Alaska feel like!! But, it only took about 24 hours to put our bodies okay with the time change, but everything is good!!

We'll no pictures for now, we're having some technical difficulties (I need Eric!!). We'll hopefully have some tomorrow or the next day.

Love you all and we'll post as soon as possible (with pictures).

Ryan and Rachel (and baby Mason)

  • Glad ya made it. After a couple times he will loosen up and be a happy-jolly fellow. Give it a little bit. Wisper sweet nothings in his ear, that will get him to laugh. Enjoy and have fun. Love ya

  • Hi Rachel and Ryan,

We are so thrilled for you!!! What an adventure! The very best part, besides seeing and living in a part of the world most of us know very little about, is that you are starting a life with a beautiful baby boy who you will love dearly and will be your joy forever.

  • JOLIET, Ill. -- Jeff Gordon spun out Matt Kenseth with four laps to go, then held on to win Sunday's Nextel Cup race at Chicagoland Speedway.

Fans showered the track with debris after the race, an apparent protest of Gordon's racing tactics.

"I hate to win one like that," Gordon said in Victory Lane. "Matt, he ran a great race."

MILWAUKEE -- Cubs right-hander Mark Prior was a late scratch from Sunday's game against the Milwaukee Brewers because of a strained muscle on his left side.

Packers To Celebrate 10th Anniversary Of Super Bowl XXXI

The Green Bay Packers Friday announced plans to celebrate the 10th anniversary season of the Super Bowl XXXI Championship during the upcoming season.

An anniversary logo was created to mark the occasion and it will be a prominent feature on many team items
((how about just win another one...and not come up with anniversary logos? ))

I remember being avidly interested in weather as a sixth grader growing up in the Chicago area. In those days, I checked out just about every weather book in the local library and even built my own weather instruments with milk cartons, paper clips, human hair, thread, hangers, and other household items.

  • Hi Rachel, Ryan and Mason,

I will be thinking of you guys when we go to Fish Day tomorrow. Of course it won't be the same without the Jodi's not living in Port any longer, and without you to party with. It is very hot here, so I will have to have a Mike's Hard Lemondade (a new addition this year) for you.
Be safe, can't wait until you are home safe and sound.

  • Ryan and Mason...this is your ESPN update!

Dale Jr. has finished last in the last 2 races...to push him to the 11th spot in the pts race.

Tony Stewart and Clint Boyer trade paint...Stewart gets black flagged flips off Carl Ewards...Tony comes back to take lead, they head to the pits and Carl spins out Tony. Tony finished 7th.

    Kurt Busch took 2nd
    -166 pts back 13th spot

Kyle Busch in the 4th spot
(his mom always said he was the gifted child)

D BLOW watched Danny Kolb close the game today. D Blow has a 34 ERA this month, killing the Brewers wild card hopes.

    Tiger wins the OPEN

Al Harris wants a new contract...but, he will report to camp next week. He won't discuss it anymore this season...( JAVONE SAID THE SAME THING! )

John Garland pitches 8 and 1/3 SHUT OUT innings for the White Sox against Texas. Ozzie should be happy... C ?...The TEXAS pitcher who plunked AJ Persinsky (catcher for the Sox) two times last week...was told to retaliate and hit the next batter up. He missed 2 times, through behind the batter both times and got BLASTED by OZZIE...HE TOSS 8 1/3 SHUT OUT innings? COME ON!

Last week OZZIE benched a pitcher and sent him to the minors because he didn't plunk a batter...he missed the batter. He ripped him one too...back to tripple A ball.

    Ricky Williams broke his arm.

BOSTON -- A stress fracture in his ribs will send Red Sox starter Tim Wakefield to the disabled list.
Manager Terry Francona confirmed the injury prior to Thursday's make-up game with the Rangers at Fenway Park.

"He's been diagnosed with a stress fracture in one of his ribs," Francona said. "He's actually been pitching with pain in his ribs for about a month or six weeks. [The] bone scan shows that there's significant healing now, which is good."
